RS Guidebook says its a 90 minute hike from the Moselkern train station to Burg Eltz. Is this accurate? Is this a leisurely pace? Can someone in good shape do it faster? I'd love to hear from anyone who has recently visited. How long should we allow roundtrip from Moselkern station?
I can't imagine it requiring more than about an hour at a normal pace. It's uphill but an easy walk almost all the way. Here's the best guide to doing the walk:
I would guess about an hour at a leisurely pace. I'm in pretty good shape so what seems like a stroll to me may be too much for others.
It's a great walk and only slightly uphill for the most part. It goes through a nicely treed landscape with a stream running through it.
I though Rick's directions to find the trailhead were a little confusing. I asked some kids who were coming home from school on the train. They were great, they walked with me until the trailhead was in sight then headed home.
Marianne - the small group that I was with in early May 2009 got from the station to Burg Eltz in just over an hour but this was not at a leisurely pace. Ninety minutes each way is a more realistic time. Take snacks and water. It is a beautiful hike which is immediately forgotten as soon as Burg Eltz comes into view. Be aware of the timing of trains out of Moselkern in the late afternoon. Warning - the red VW van from Burg Eltz does not take you in the direction of Moselkern.
