Mosel River Area: Hotel Haus Lipmann or Altes Winzerhaus

My family of four will be staying in the Mosel River area in Germany for 4 night/5 days. Is anyone familiar with the following hotels: Hotel Haus Lipmann in Beilstein
Altes Winzerhaus in Cochem We booked the family apartment at the Altes Winzerhaus last night, but found out this morning that the Hotel Haus Lipmann has availability (in a double room with extra beds added) as well for us. I know that Rick Steves highly recommends the Hotel Haus Lipmann, but there is no mention of the Altes Winzerhaus. Does anyone know if one of these hotels is more desirable than the other? We are leaning toward the Hotel Haus Lipmann. Any personal experiences with either of these properties??? Thank you!!

I can't really comment on the Altes Winzerhaus except that I think it is off an inner courtyard in the "city center" (A town as small as Beilstein can hardly have what is called a "city center.") However, we spent a very delightful five days in Hotel Haus Lippman in the fall of 2009. It was excellent. Our room looked out over the road and the Mosel just beyond. Morning church bells from across the river only added to the charm. Below us was a grapevine covered dining area but the leaves were so thick neither us nor the diners were ever bothered. Just be sure you get the correct Hotel Lippman. There are I think three in Beilstein. The one you want is right on the river road. It is called Hotel Haus Lippman and has a small circular entrance that takes you up to the restaurant area and into the main lobby. There is also an entrance off the courtyard in the rear. It was an absolutley wonderful place to stay. The proprietors were gracious, friendly, and efficient. We'll definitely stay there again when we go back (notice I did not say "if we go back." Enjoy your stay in Beilstein.

Thanks for the quick response. We are booking the Hotel Haus Lipmann and cancelling the other reservation. Thank you so much for your feedback. ; )

You will not regret staying at Haus Lippmann. There are two different restuarants and both are excellent. Breakfast was served by candlelight in the building where our room was located-had a great view of the Mosel.

Beilstein is an extremely tiny town. I went there by bus on a Sunday in Nov 2008. The bus back wasn't for four hours; after 2 hrs I was ready to leave (it would have helped a little if the castle ruins had not been closed for the season).

Thanks all. We will have a car, so we plan to make day trips in and out of Beilstein. I hope we didn't book ourselves too much time for this area, but by looking at photos of the Mosel River area, I could stay forever in such a beautiful place. Beilstein is actually in the middle of a two week trip for us. At the front end of the trip, we're staying 6 days/5 nights in Paris. After we leave Beilstein, we are moving on to London for 5 nights...so I think the activity level of the Mosel River area will be just perfect sandwiched between two big city visits.

Don't plan on spending more than a day in Beilstein. Definitely go up the Mosel and see the wine towns of Bernkastel-Kues, probably the most famous Riesling town of all, or Zell (Mosel) famous for the Schwarzkatz legend. Spend a day in Cochem, see the Reichsburg castle and visit Rademacher winery, just opposite the train station.
for another day, if the weather is good, take a day trip to Moselkern and Burg Eltz. Any more time go up to Trier or down to Koblenz and see the famous Deutsches Eck. If you haven't had you fill of castles, go to Braubach, a short trip from Koblenz, to the Marksburg, the best preserved medieval castle in the area.
