Morocco Tour Guides Recommendation

Hi,

I know this is not the African forum, however, I am having trouble finding honest recommendations on the internet regarding reliable travel guides in Morocco. People on RS have been very helpful and honest and I hope to use your recommendations if you have been on a Morocco tour.

I will go into Morocco (most likely fly into Marrakech from Madrid). There are many tours available that cover my interest, in particular, I would like to sleep under the stars in the desert, visit Ait Benhaddou, Dades Valley, etc.

If you did the above plus other things in Morocco, please let me know which guide you hired/price estimate/duration.

Thank you!

Judy, My recommendation -- from fabulous Marrakech get yourself south east of the city to the town called M'Hamid. If you start early you can do it in a day. You can get there by hiring a car, getting a taxi or using a bus -- depends on your budget. The route is over the Tizi-n-Tichka pass. This is OK outside of winter -- in January this year I was in a blizzard up there in our own 4x4!! It is a spectacular trip. You pass through the town of Ouarzazate where the Atlas Film Studios are. A good hotel to use there is the Hotel La Valee - http://www.hotellavalleemaroc.com/

When you get to the "wild west" town of M'Hamid you are at the end of the tarmac so if you want to go out into the desert you'll need a 4x4 or someone to take you. In the centre of town there is a little square with a couple of tour offices -- go and see Mokhtar at the "Mitiko Blue Man" office -- www.mitikoblueman.com -- very nice guy - he will sort out your trip for you. He helped us with a route across the desert to Foum-Zguid and wanted no payment at all for his time.

There are some "bivouac" camps near there - in the dunes - and spending the night out there is spectacular. I can still hear the Touareg drums!!

Have a great trip!!

Roger

Sorry!! - just tried that web site at www.mitikoblueman.com -- seems like he no longer maintains it -- the phone number is 0021262403939. He speaks some English and of course, French.
