Morocco - how much to cover legs and arms?

I am planning to travel to Morocco this summer with a friend (both of us are women). I have read conflicting reports about if your arms should be covered. I wouldn't wear tank tops, but was wondering for those women that have travelled to Morocco, if short-sleeved shirts are acceptable? Also are pants best, or are capri pants acceptable? Any other dress tips would be welcome too! Thanks!

I went to Morocco two years ago with my wife. Short sleeved shirts are acceptable for Western women, but I wouldn't go with sleeveless. Pants are best, capri would be fine too. Honestly, with the sun, you will want loose, light clothing that covers your skin.

We observed Europeans wearing basically whatever they felt like, including mini skirts, spaghetti straps, etc. However, NONE of the local women wore anything like that.

Younger women usually covered their heads, but were not veiled. The further south you go, the more traditional the dress. You will not be expected to cover your head. If you are going to the desert, bring a light colored pashmina to fashion into a turban (the locals can help).

If you have any other Morocco questions, PM me!

My wife and I are in Morocco periodcally. I agree pretty much with Mike, but would clarify that SS shirts are the button-up kind, not t-shirts.

My wife usually has a scarf tucked somewhere, but has only used it a couple of times. When we're out with friends of varing degrees of conservatism, they wear what they wear and we wear our regular duds -- everybody's comfortable.

We uduslly wear long sleeve shirts as sun protection and roll them up as we need to.

All bets are off on what anybody wears in either Tanger or the Atlantic resorts.

Do not ride a camel. They are mean and smell bad.

It depends tremendously where you are going. Sticking to the main tourist areas? Don't worry - you'll be surrounded by sunburned northern Europeans, some showing entirely too much skin for even most western tastes. If you're headed off into the hinterlands, then adjust accordingly and be more conservative.

Personally, I would be more worried about being killed by the summer heat (really, you're going to Morocco in the hottest part of the year? Are you looking to suffer?). You will want to cover up to avoid turning into a cinder. Other considerations will quickly become secondary.

I've been to Morocco several times and love the place but you couldn't pay me enough to spend any time there in the middle of the summer. Good luck!
