We will be staying in Sevilla and would like to do Tangier as a day trip. I can find a train (we are not renting a car) as far as Cadiz, but what is the best way to get to Tarifa?

What you could do is take the bus from seville to algericas and then hop on the free shuttle to Tarifa. Then purchase the FRS ticket and it is a 45 minuted boat trip to Tangier.

Are you intending to leave Sevilla, go to Tangier, and back to Sevilla all in one day? You won't have any time to see Tangier if that's the case - your whole day will be eaten up by travel if you try to do it by train or bus, plus the ferries are not always on time/timely. Others may have a different opinion, but your time might be better spent in Spain (or renting a car for the day, if you're sent on Tangier). Good luck!
