I`m planning a trip to Spain in September using trains and a rental car. Is a stop in Morocco worthwhile? Is an overnight in Morocco worthwhile? Is there a place to leave a rental car in Tarifa while in Morocco? Thanks.
There's parking right near the ferry docks. An overnight to Tangier will not do you any more good than a day trip, so I wouldn't bother. Both will let you say you've seen anothe continent, but that's about it.
To really see Morocco, you need a good couple of weeks and need to get at least as far south as Fez before you start branching southeast and southwest.
My husband and I did a day trip to Morocco from Spain because that was all the time we could devote to it on that trip. Ed is certainly correct that you're not going to see much of Morocco in one day. However, to my way of looking at it, just because you can't see it all doesn't mean you shouldn't see any. We enjoyed our day trip very much, felt that we did get a good taste, and it helped us to decide whether or not we wanted to return someday. For us, it was very worthwhile. I can't see that one overnight would be better than a day trip, though. I'd say you should either just do the day, or schedule lots more time to see more of the entire country.
Also, I would definitely recommend getting a guide. I think RS recommends some. If you don't get one ahead of time, you will be bombarded when you step off the ferry.
Thanks Ed and D.D. I appreciate your advice. Dave
Though I have only been to Europe Once I have been to Africa a few times and been to Tangier. Go see the souk and the medina. Go to the beach an drink some mint tea.
I went to Tangiers from Tarifa last year. While it is definitely worth it, be sure to get a guide that Rick recommends...we got one through the ferry company and it was extremely touristy and they made us visit stores so they'd get a kick back. A day trip is more than enough to Tangiers. Great place.
A stop in Morocco is definately worthwhile. I was there this spring and used Aziz as a guide (he is recommended by Rick). We had a wonderful day. I also recommend a day and maybe a couple of nights in Tarifa, if you have room in your schedule. This was our jumping off point for visiting not only Morocco, but also Gibraltar and the Roman ruins at Bolonia. The location is fabulous and we really wished we had booked an extra day or two just to enjoy Tarifa. If you stay in the old town (we stayed at La Casa Amarilla), you can walk to the ferry port in just a few minutes and the boat to Tangier takes about 45 minutes.
Ok. youve all convinced me. I
m going to stay in Tarifa, get a guide, and head into Tangiers for the day. Thank you all for great information.
