There are three of us going to Marrakech for 3 nights and Meknes for 3 nights in April of 2010. I am looking for the possiblity of Riad's. If I could keep it aroung $100/ night. Hotel would bo ok too. Other items to must see or don't see too.
Michael, with six days & nights, I'd steal a day & night each from Marrakech and Meknes, and spend those two in Fes. Meknes is OK (be sure to go to the ruins at Volubulis), but honestly I don't know what I would do there for 3 days. Fes is really amazing - the best, most intact medieval city in the Arab world. There's no place like it, and it's the equal of Marrakech (at least).
I can't make a recommendation for accommodations in Marrakech (was there recently, and stayed at an unmemorable but cheap place); I was in Meknes years ago and (I believe) stayed in a hostel. For Fes (was there last fall), I would highly recommend Dar Seffrarine - it was spectacular. My wife described it (gushingly) "it's like sleeping at the Alhambra!" Not cheap, but worth it IMHO.
Visit Fes, and you'll never look at leather the same way again. :)
I stayed at the Riad al Faras in Marrakech for one night. It was clean and reasonably priced. A bit hard to find, but most riads will be if there are off the center.
Another riad we stayed at was amazing and cheaper, but sorry I don't know the name. We had a "helper" help us find accomodations for the night and he took us to this place. It was right off the center and we took some lovely night pics of the marketplace. I really wish I knew the name because I would love to stay there again. You may want to just find one when you get there though if it isn't high season.
The IBIS (next to the railway station) is a good predictable standby. Nothing particularly Moroccan about it, but it is within walking distance of the main square.
