I wrote previously asking about somewhere cheaper to stay at the end of our Swiss vacation. Several people suggested Annecy. I liked the idea especially since we are flying out of Geneva. I was told it was close - like 1 hr. As I now am trying to check train travel - I am getting some really weird, long trips on the sbb online timetable. Like to go from Montreux to Annecy thru Martigny - they send me to Martingy and then back all the way around the lake thru Geneva and then what appears to be a very out of the way trip from Geneva. There was some indication that there may be construction. Anyone know what is going on and if it will still be happening by mid August when we will be there? Thanks. Janet
There is track work on the section between the Swiss-France border down to Chamonix, if you go via Martigny. There should be a bus replacement for that section, but I only see it for May and June trips. I could not find any indication of what happens after that. You could always go via Geneva, but from Montreux that takes 3.95 to 4 hours. If the point is to go someplace less expensive than Geneva but still close enough to the Geneva airport, there are small towns along Lac Leman that are less expensive, such as Vevey; or you could stay away frommthe lake a bit.
There is frequent bus service from Annecy to Geneva and the airport. Also, you can stay in a village on the French side and easily get to the airport by bus. We stayed at a great B&B in Sevigny, and the bus is about 15 minutes to the French side of the airport. Ferney-Voltaire is even closer.
Thanks, Lola and Robert - I'll check into your suggestions.
