Montparnasse

Unfortunately we bid on a hotel and got the Montparnasse area. (we thought we had bid on Latin Quarter). Anything of interest in this area? Is it within walking distance of anything? We are taking the train in from Nice, and it seems rather complicated to get to Gare Montparnasse and then the metro and then the bus....luggage et al. Any advice would be appreciated.

There's good news and bad news.

You're more than a mile from most everything on your side of the river (maybe close to two to Notre Dame). However, going out in the morning, it's all a downhill walk. Just figure on burning a couple of metro tickets each day and you'll be okay.

The good news is Montparnasee is one of the neat little villages that grew together to become the city. Poke around a bit and you'll really come to like it.

Not sure if you come into Paris at Lyon or Austerlitz, but regardless, once you start riding the RER/metro system, you'll only have one line change.

Don't bother to change. You'll have a great time.

It's really quite easy to get from Gare de Lyon to Montparnasse-Bienvenue. Take metro line 14 one stop to Bercy. Transfer to metro line 6 and take it to Montparnasse-Bienvenue. If you give us the name and address of your hotel, we can advise you further on how to get there with the least amount of walking.

Patty, i am also staying in Montparnasse by choice for our upcoming trip, i have read lots of good things about that area. You are not that far from the majors sites, close to Luxembourg gardens, and you can hop on the RER to Versailles.
The metro-RER system is very efficient, you can get anywhere fairly easy, don't worry about it and have a good trip!

Patty - What a great location! We stayed there a couple of years ago and loved it. You can walk to everything or take the metro. One of the best memories for us was walking around in the morning and discovering a new bakery - or in the evening and having dinner with the locals. To see the real Paris - these are the neighbourhoods you need to stay in. Enjoy!
