Montmartre: Morning or afternoon?

Last time I was in Paris (10+ years ago), my tour group dropped us at Montmartre in the early monring hours, and I remember it being not so busy and beautiful. But everything I've read now recommends a late afternoon/early evening walk through....any thoughts? Also, I would think the pushy street sellers would not be as bad in the morning ?? Any thoughts?

What you said is correct. If you want it quiet, go in the morning. If you want to get into the swing of the dinner thing, go then.
