Montmartre area of Paris?

We booked our hotel for Paris a couple of months ago, before I started reading about the different areas.

Now I'm reading that this particular area is not very safe?? We're booked at the Hotel Square D'Anvers. Does anyone have any experiences staying in this area of Paris? Is it really that bad?

I haven't stayed in that area, but I know it. The area just south of the hill of Montmartre, sadly, is a bit tacky, although probably not necessarily anymore unsafe than the rest of Paris. Just be prepared for the usual con-artists and pickpockets to be a bit more noticable in this area.

You've probably heard about the nearby red light district along the Boulevard Clichy around the Place Pigalle. That area is seedy and sexually explicit but not one area of serious street crime.

However, your hotel is in another direction. You can take a virtual tour of the neighborhood on Google Maps by entering the address and using its Street View function. I just did. I think you'll be reassured. On the day Google filmed the street, there was a cool little market going on.

I stayed there for 3 nights back in July of 2007. I felt safe. The area always had lots of people walking around in the evening (watching the sunset, dining, and there were a couple of "barbeque fundraisers" held by some younger college age groups). I didn't go walking down the red light streets alone at 3am or anything, though.

I did not stay in Montmartre while in Paris, but I was in the neighborhood several nights (including one late night) walking on my own and did not feel unsafe. In the Pigalle area, there are stripper clubs and porn shops - but not really any more than what you might see in a big North American city.

I saw some gypsies hanging around Sacre Couer and the base of the funicular during the daytime when there are loads of tourists they can approach, but most of them vanish when the tourists are gone for the day. Overall, Montmartre is a nice area with cute bistros and cafes and pretty side streets. I would not be hesitant to stay there in a hotel.

Thanks for the reassurance everyone! I'm sure it'll be fine and we'll just be as careful there as we would in any other city :)

The place where your hotel is located is OK, but don't wonder around to your north-east: the dodgy area is the square made of of metro stops Barbes, Chateau Rouge, La Chapelle and Marx Dormoy. The area around Gare du Nord can also be bleek at night.

Be aware the Chateau Rouge metro station is not safe at night. The only times I have seen blatantly open petty crime in Paris have been at that station.

I stayed in Montmartre several times, and never had a problem. Montmartre is high-tourist traffic area, but like almost all areas of Paris that tourists tend to frequent, there are pickpockets and gypsies, but I would never go so far to say that it's an extreme problem. I think you'll be fine, Montmartre is one of my favorite places in Paris. :) Good luck!

Anvers is perfectly safe and in my opinion, charming. And Montmartre is my favorite part of Paris. I used to take the kids into the city and this was where they always felt at home, though i guess that up the hill near Abbesses might be better.

Oh, and regarding Chateau Rouge...I had friends visiting last Oct and sent them to the market there, just so they could see somthing a bit different/another side of Paris...they had the "good luck" to be there when police arrived to stop the fake watch sellers. Almost trampled in the stampede, but later enjoyed talking to the Haitian vegetable women.
Check the Trip Advisor reviews for your hotel...sounds okay
