Monte Carasso/Lugano

My mother and I are planning on visiting Lugano in September with the intention of going to Monte Carasso to see where her grandparents were born. Any advice on getting to Monte Carasso? Distance? Train travel? Getting around Monte Carasso? Thank you!!
