Money for food

i'm planning the budget for my 2-week stay in paris and was wondering how much to plan to spend on food. i'll have an apartment, so i can cook. i don't plan to eat out very often, except maybe lunches. i might like to splurge once on a nicer meal. i'm a vegetarian, so won't be buying meat. what would people suggest as a daily food allowance?

We spend about 50 to 75 Euro per day for the two of us when we visit Paris. That includes eat in breakfast, lunch in a brasserie or restaurant, and dinner at home, plus a cafe' or two while exploring. Eating dinner out can raise the daily spending to 100 Euro really quick. All Paris restaurants and brasseries have their menu and prices posted on the door, window, chalk board, etc. I would recommend that you buy from the price-fix menu and not order from the menu. You will need to do a google search for restaurants that cater to vegetarians. Indian restaurants come to mind, but I do not eat at them, so I am not really sure what is available.

Norma, you will find beautiful fruits and veggies in the markets. They cost more than in the Atlanta, GA area where I live but the prices are somewhat in line with the New York and Boston area, where I usually suffer sticker shock when I visit. Since you wont be buying meat or cold cuts, which both are expensive in Paris, you could allow perhaps 50% more than your food budget at home. I think you could eat very well on that, preparing your own meals. It's the little things that add up, the tiny 6 Euro ice cream cone, the 8 Euro iced coffee (not recommended, instant coffee with sugar, no cream, no nothing, barely cold)....
