Monaco and French Riviera Day Tripping

We will be staying at the Marriott in Monaco for two weeks this October and would like to see the sights in the region. Never been to this area before and want to visit as many interesting area as possible in the French Riviera. Is day tripping by train a good option for this purpose if so would they be available from the Monaco train station or would we need to travel to Nice. We have used trains for day tripping in other area of Europe and found them very convenient and enjoyable. Would having a rental car make more sense for travel in this area. Private tours are available but are very expensive. Would appreciate suggestions or recommendations!

Here are two sites where you can get more information than you will probably need.
www.guideriviera.com (click onto "practical guide")
www.fommers.com/destinations/monaco

I will be using the info I got from these two when I am in Monaco next month. I have used the sncf on the riviera before to do day trips from Nice and it's perfect for that. Have a splendid time.

You can daytrip easily & cheaply along the coast by train or bus ie. Antibes, Villefranche sur la mer, Nice then walk around with little effort. To get to the corniches above I always have a car and a good map. they are worth the extra effort to see. Ie Eze etc and the views are drop dead gorgeous. Take a lunch picnics and have dinner in Eze overlooking the French Rivera.

Be sure and check the busses for day tripping. They are easy, cheap and usually drop you in the area of town that is closer to the fun stuff. An example is Nice where most of the busses leave from their station only a few blocks from the coast. The train station in Nice is a bit of a walk to the coast. Train works better for some locations and bus for others. Wow, two weeks, have a great time.

I think there is a bus to Nice that stops just in front of the Casino in Monaco. Anyway, one of the two websites that I gave you (above) has that information.

I LOVE Monte Carlo...you will have a wonderful time, especially visiting the old town.
We took buses everywhere in Southern France. We lived there for a year and I highly recommend Eze...but there are two of them...one at sea level and one up a steep cliff...take the correct bus...it is Eze Village (at sea level)and Eze Haute (Haute is pronounced Oh)....then La Turbie, fabulous...then Beaulieu, then Menton....Cannes should be visited by train...Menton also. There are ttwo interesting islands out of Cannes that make a great day trip...for a bit of hiking or a walk. Don't rent a car, not necessary. It is a hoot because all the women who board the buses in Monte Carlo wear full length fur coats (well, it is cold) and always greet the driver and all riders on the bus....so charming!
