Mittenwald

Will be spending 2 days in Mittenwald enroute to Italy in July. Looking for neat things to do there.

Hi Nancy,

Question... are you traveling by car or train?
Neat things to do? You can take the Karwendelbahn cable car in Mittenwald. Ettal Monestary is nearby, as is Oberammaergau. The Zugspitze from Garmisch (20 min. away) is a very neat thing to do, as is the Sommerrodelbahn (luge ride). Ludwig's Linderhof Palace is doable and fantastic also.

Our favorites for dinner... Da Mamma Lucia and the Kleiner Kartoffelsack (in the pedestrian zone).

Hope this helps get you started.

Hi again Nancy,

Just wanted to add that if your driving into Italy via Innsbruck/Brenner Pass, a half an hour south on the A22 is the very charming old town of Sterzing/Vipiteno. Well worth an hour stop over. Easy off and back on the highway also.

Thanks again Paul. Will have to check it out. We have plenty of time. Have you ever been to Wallgau? Will be driving near there and read somewhere that it is "a do not miss" place and to "have your camera ready". Is it worth the detour?

Hi Nancy,

We've never been to Wallgau. It is very close to Mittenwald though.
If you have plenty of time and are looking for a "have your camera ready" area, have you considered the Dolomite region? The Val Gardena is about 1:30 south of Innsbruck (about 2 hrs from Mittenwald). Drive a Dolomite pass or two for spectacular scenery!

Hi Paul,
I didn't realize who I was talking to. I have been on your sight several times. Actually chose Mittenwald based on it. Staying at Pension Schwabennestl for 2 nights. Then heading for the Dolomites. 3 nights in Castelrotto, then 3 nights in Vernazza, and 3 nights in Varenna. (Spending 2 nights in the Alsace and 2 nights in Meersburg before Mittenwald).
Thanks so much for the insights. Any more suggestions would be great. Will only have a car to Mittenwald. Riding the rail the rest.

Hi Nancy,

Just a few suggestions...

While in Castelrotto, try to spend at least an afternoon in the Seiser Alm/Alpe di Siusi. Beautiful area!

Mittenwald, we liked the views from the top of Karwendelbahn (cable car). It's right across town from the Schwalbennestl. You can see the cable cars going up and down from the room balcony.

The luge ride is a blast! From Mittenwald, drive towards Garmisch (there's only one main road) and as you enter the city limits, look for the sign Sommerrodelbahn (luge ride) on the left hand side of the road. Only a couple of Euro per ride.

If you love chocolate, try a "Mohr im Hemd" at the Kleiner Kartoffelsack in Mittenwald.

The views from the Schwalbennestl are terrific.

Have a great trip!

Paul
