Miniatur Wunderland

I was wondering how many here have been to the minature train set (Miniatur Wunderland) in Hamburg. Looks like it would be a site well worth visiting. An incredible amount of work to build such a display and one I would like to visit one day. Any opinions from those who have been there? Do you recommend it if in the area? http://www.miniatur-wunderland.com/exhibit/video/4-minutes-wunderland/

I've never been - yet (well, duh). I've seen many TV stories on it, though. It is really detailed...Definitely going to make time for it the next time I'm in the area!

Hi, Lane - never even heard of it - too bad, I love trains and have been in Hamburg before. Have you been to Bryson City, NC - there's a beautiful train lay-out, which I did see. In case you hadn't heard of it, here's their website: http://www.smokymountaintrains.com/

I was in Hamburg in 2008 & had never heard of it but my friends in Germany recommended it. It was incredible & I'm not really into model trains. The size of it and detail are amazing. Very cool when it slowly turns dark and all the lights come on including the autos headlights. There are fairgrounds with working rides, outdoor theatres with actors moving, all kinds of stuff going on. You'll spend hours checking it out & taking many photos guaranteed. Close to the harbor area so it was an easy walk to it after I took a harbor cruise.

Or head up the road to Helen to see the trains there! It's a miniature version of Germany, from the north sea to the alps, complete with ski lifts, Oktoberfest, and UFO's. It's owned (and built) by a man from Bremerhafen. www.georgiamodelrailroad.com

Thanks Doug for the input. Sounds like a definite must see if in the area. Anna, I have been to Bryson City only one time many years ago but did not know about the train set. Thanks for the heads up. Maureen, I was in Helen twice in the past 10 months but it was in the winter to take photos of Helen and the surrounding area so many things were closed. Next time I will check out the train set you mentioned. Thanks.
