Milan Salzburg via night train

Three of us will be traveling from Milan to Salzburg and would love to experience the night train. However, I
Have a few questions regarding night train travel. I have been on the Italian site fsitaliane.it. Wow I am confused. I am trying to figure times and fares for an overnight trip from Milan to Salzburg. I found a train I think. We will be going in Oct, so I used a Sunday night date in July because Oct was to far off. When i put the date in May choices came up but only one with a fare. It stopped at Udine. So when i went on to the next page I was able to pick a fare again I did not have a clue was looking for a go fare, no such fine. Did click on the first Smart one. It pulled up 72.Euros. Now I had 3 people is this a pp price or a total price. Then I went below and chose a 3 bed compartment as 3 of us will be traveling. Do you have to book one at a time? If so what is there is not enough availabilty for 3 and I get either 1 or 2 in and then full. This is very confusing. Other option is to fly, buy the train is an experience we do not have here in the US. Any help is appreciated.

If I were doing this, I would start on the Deutsche Bahn website (German rail) to figure out which train you want. That site is WAY easier to read and has excellent detail. http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en Must you travel on a Sunday? If not, try entering different days of the week to look at the options. They will vary, with Sat and Sun often being quite different. Unfortunately, it looks like the overnight connections Milan to Salzburg are not ideal. A couple of train changes will be required and the "sleeper" portion of the trip is a bit short (like 11 pm to 6 am.) Beware of long connections in the middle of the night. No fun to spend 3 hrs. in a train station at 2am. But pick what you like!
Then try trenitalia.com to purchase the tickets. I will defer to someone with more experience to clarify the sleeper compartment details.
