Has anybody here taken an tour from Mike's Bike Tours? I will be in Munich for three days next summer, and I am planning on taking their all-day tour of Munich as well as their tour of the Neuschwanstein Castle. Are there any major sites that the all-day tour does not cover that I should plan to visit on my empty day? I was thinking about making a day trip to Dachau, but if there are any remaining major sites in the city I would like to visit them instead.
Also, does the price for the all-day tour include entry fees to the sites, or do we have to pay for them separately?
As of when I took Mike's tour in Munich two years ago, the tour lasted a few hours, but wasn't all day. Other than one church that does not charge admission, the tour is entirely outdoors. If you want to visit the interior of any of the sites, you will have to go back at a later time. Some of the major sites the tour does not pass include the Frauenkirche, the Viktualienmarkt and the Nymphenburg, and the Theresienwiese. I enjoyed the tour, but if time is limited and you want to actually visit the interiors of Munich's highlights, you may want to skip it.
I did Mike's bike tour in 2004 with my teenage kids. We loved it. It is like a overview of Munich. We saw the outside of the major sites. You also stop several times for beer/lunch. I also enjoyed the Munich walk tours. I did the Third reich tour and the Beer tour in the evening. Dachau is also very interesting. Rothenburg is also a nice day trip if you go to Dachau. I love this area of Germany. Have a great trip.
I did the bike tour last summer with three teenagers. We enjoyed the tour because it gave us a feel for the city and then we knew what we wanted to go back and see more of. I have taken bike tours in Berlin, Paris, and New York for the same reason.
I have not done the tour to Neuschwanstein. I have talked to people who took it and they enjoyed it. We chose to stay a few nights in the Fuessen area instead so we did not need the tour.
My wife and 25 year old son took Mike's Munich tour 3 weeks ago. They enjoyed the 4-hour bike tour very much. They were able to see several places that we all went back and looked at more closely, including the beer garden in the English garden. The guide that they had was very entertaining. No negatives.
They met under the "new" tower in Marienplatz, so you have the option to see THAT area before and/or after biking. VictualMarkt is very near Marienplatz as are churches, the famous Hofbrauhaus and, of course, the glockenspiel (we were less than thrilled with the glockenspiel, don't plan your day around it).
Thank you all for your input! I was considering doing the 4 hour tour, but the all day tour is only €11 more and covers a lot of the main sites that the shorter one does not, so I think it's a real good deal.
