Midsummer Concert at Schonbrunn, Vienna - opinions?

My wife and I are planning a 2-3 week stay in Vienna (not our first visit) in May 2014, to celebrate our 50th anniversary. The highlight could be the annual Midsummer Concert by the Vienna Philharmonic at the Schonbrunn Park (it's been on PBS TV.) This is a free event, with no tickets or reservations available, but with very limited seating and standing areas. I would appreciate advice from anybody who has attended about the best time to show up to get a seat, and where. Also, any opinions about the concert - is it worth going in person, or is this one of those things that are best seen on television?
We usually stay at the Hotel Kaiserin Elisabeth in Innerstadt and travel by tram or bus (metro stairs are a bit of a struggle for me.)

Edmund I'm keen to see the answers you get - I'd love to go and see that concert, too.

Post your question on tripadvisor - lots of personal experiences will come up. For this event - come as early as you can to claim your seat or patch of grass. It is best seen in person, for sure.
