Does anyone know the location of a Mephisto shoe store closer to the Rue Cler area in Paris? Also with the present exchange rate are they any cheaper in Paris than in the States? Thanks in advance for your help.
There is a Mephisto store on Rue Ste.Peres. I don't know how the prices compare to here. I bought a pair in Toulouse in May and they were about 140 Euros. Jodi
There is a Mephisto shoe store on Rue Cler a block or two from Hotel Leveque toward the Ecole Militaire Metro stop.
Xchg is bad these days. also you must factor in any fee charges from banks atms or charge cards.Just returned and French bank charged me $300 for every transaction I made.
I would much rather purchase in US and also have a return option if need be.
Swan,
I'd forgotten about that Mephisto store on Rue Cler until I read your Post. It brought back some memories of my stay in Paris last Fall!
We priced Mephisto shoes last year during our trip to Strasbourg and found they were about the same prices as here. You might get some different styles, though.
I am in Paris and can state the Mephistos are cheaper to bring with you than buy here. Who wants to pay 19+% tax on purchases (in euro no less) just to say you got the same thing in Paris that you could obtain in the States? Reserve your purchases to items you cannot get in the US-that is what my strategy is....
Best and happy travels
The last time that I was in Paris (3 years ago), I compared the prices with those in the States. At that time they were about a third cheaper. However, now that the exchange rate has gotten so bad, I'm not sure that you would save much.
Somewhat unrelated, but I just found out earlier this year that you can get your Mephisto shoes resoled/refurbished. I wish I had known this a while ago. I had my sandals done this year at www.mephistoresole.com. They did a fantastic job. While it took about a month to get the sandals back, they looked like they were brand new.
JS, you did mean $3.00 and not $300 charge from
the French bank?
I bought a pair of Mephistos at the Rue Cler shoe store last month (August). I had just completed the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage in Spain, and all I had for footwear was my boots and sandals. So I wanted something nicer and more comfortable to wear around Paris for a couple of days.
The pair I bought was around 130 Euros - a bit spendy, but they're probably the most comfortable shoes I've ever owned. And after the Camino, my feet deserved a little present ;-)

Oh yes, I was in that store on Rue Cler a couple of weeks ago. A big disappointment, two pretty grouchy, slouchy-looking guys, maybe a father and a son team. The only pair in my size that I liked was THE ONLY pair in the store, and one shoe has spent a lot of time on a display rack outside, so it was pretty dirty and the colour faded a bit compare to the other shoe that was kept inside. When I realized that, I politely declined, and the younger guy expressed his displeasure with me for not buying!!! The best way to buy any shoes is here in the States on eBay. Go to the store and try shoes, know your size, see if they are comfotable for you, and then search for them on eBay, their prices can't be beat. By the way, Rue Cler in general was a big disappointment, nothing special or charming about it at all. I am glad I did not stay in the area.
