Two of us are planning to be in Melk in May to visit the Abbey. (a) Does anyone have a recommendation for good moderate hotel?
We then plan to take a cruise down the Danube from Melk to Krems.
(b) Is the cruise worth doing? Any recommendation for which cruise line to take?
After we get to Krems, we need a way to get to Vienna for the night.
(c) Should we take the train, bus, or what?
I drove down along the Danube. Then you can stop where you like and see the little towns along the way. There were plenty of places to stay along the way
The Abbey and the cruise are both very much worth doing but I did the trip from Vienna without an overnight stay in Melk. Took the morning train to Melk {leaving Vienna at 8:20 or 9:34 and getting to Melk at 9:41 or 10:47 },saw the Abbey, then took the 2:00 cruise from Melk to Krems and the train from Krems to Spittelau and the U-Bahn back to my hotel. It was a great day out!
Jan and others,
Thank you very much for your good tips.
When you visited Melk from Vienna, did you have to buy tickets for each leg separately? or is there a cheaper all inclusive package from Vienna to Melk and back by cruise and train? What is your recommendation?
