I have the opportunity to take a trip of a lifetime, all expenses paid, to ski in France over New Year's. The only problem is, it's up to me to plan it and I have no idea where to begin! Can anyone give me some information about the pros and cons of Megeve and Courchevel? Those are the two spots, in addition to Paris, that my friend is determined to visit and my only job is to figure out where to go and why. I'd appreciate any and all information about why one spot might be preferable to another, as well as any leads on great places to stay in Paris. The goal of the trip is to relax, eat great food, enjoy the culture and sights, ski, and get away from it all after a traumatic year for both of us. Her budget isn't unlimited, but she's quite comfortable and we definitely won't be staying in hostels like I did last time I was in Europe.
Thanks in advance!
Both Megève and Courchevel were purpose built ski resorts. Megève is an upscale ski resort that was designed to compete with the neighboring Swiss ski resorts. Megève is at fairly low altitude which can be a problem. Courchevel (composed of several distinct villages) was planned during the 1940s so it is not especially quaint IMO. It is at higher altitude and also offers skiing access to a massive area.
Courchevel seems to attract more of an international crowd than Megève.
Thank you for the info! I was drawn to the rustic charm of Megeve, but had concerns about the viability of skiing...they haven't had much snowfall this year. Appreciate your input!
Courchevel attracts a more flashy and younger crowd. It seems to become a favorite destination for wealthy Russians. Megeve is typically more old money and traditional. I personally find Courchevel so fake and extravagant. I'll take Zermatt, Gstaad, or Verbier in Switzerland any day over Courchevel for luxury in a more tasteful fashion.
