Mecklenburg Lake District and Baltic coast

Thanks for all the help you all have given me during my planning. Only 9 days til I leave! My mom has decided to join me from Aug. 1st to Aug. 8th and we are discussing some alternative options. Originally I was going to be in Berlin during this time with a 2 night trip to Schwerin. Now we are considering renting a car for all or part of our trip away from Berlin and making our way to the Baltic Coast via Schwerin. We will be spending more than 2 nights in this area. Any suggestions of the best way to do this or a good place to go on the Baltic coast? One helpful Rick Steves poster has suggested Heiligendamm, Bad Doberan after Schwerin. He was also the one who suggested I go up in this region to begin with. We are thinking to go up there during the week because it will be less busy. I'm 28 and my mother is 49.

Thank you!

From Schwerin you could go up to Stralsund, stop for a meal and wander around and then go to the island of Ruegen, Germany's largest island. We did this three years ago, however, it was late May, so pre-season and not very crowded. We had beautiful hotel rooms in Binz and visited several other towns, rode the miniature railway and took a steamer around the coast. The island has white cliffs, just like Dover. However, this time of year, it might be really crowded on the island but perhaps not so much in a mainland town. A car would really be good for this kind of trip. I'm still sorry that I didn't pick up a piece of amber jewelry.

German Rail has an offering called the Ostsee-Ticket. €41 for the first person (€31 for person 2-5), round trip in 2nd class, from any station in Berlin to the Baltic coast (Bad Doberan is one of the destinations). The tickets are always available from automats (€4 extra from a counter); no advance purchase required. You have nine days to complete the trip. The information is available, in German, here.

Hi,

You might want to consider the Schwerin trip using Hamburg as a base instead of Berlin, if you think you might go into the Holstein region. Another place to visit is Stralsund, which was strongly recommended to me but just have not gotten around to it. I do envy your traveling to Schwerin and in Mecklenburg!!
