Hi - In December I will be in Austria visiting a friend who lives near Salzburg. She has suggested that we go to Mayrhofen for a few days. Can someone with personal experience tell me if it is a large and touristy town or an authentic and smaller village? Any info on the place will be appreciated. Thanks. Julia
It's a decent area to ski, but I don't recall it being a small village. However, driving along most any valley road in Austria you go through developed areas as well as smaller "authentic" villages.
Hi Julia, If your friend suggested staying in Mayrhofen, is there a reason she wants to stay there? We visited Mayrhofen in Sept. '09. We actually stayed in Finkenberg, which overlooks Mayrhofen. My opinion is that the town of Mayrhofen is nothing special. The Zillertal though has some of the most beautiful alpine scenery we've seen in Austria. Be sure to visit the Advent/Christmas markets in Salzburg. They're wonderful. Paul
Is there such thing as an "inauthentic" village?
Good question, Huttenfeld! You've caught me on my inexact use of English! :) My friend suggested Mayrhofen because her daughter lives there but we won't be staying with her. Thanks for all your responses. Julia
