My husband and I are planning a 14 day trip the last two weeks of next May to Heidelberg, Rothenberg, Dachau, Salzburg, and Lucerne Switzerland before spending a few days in the Netherlands with family. Besides some of the obvious stops, does anyone have suggestions for "off the beaten path" places that are "must sees"?
With the exception of Heidelberg, which I went to 28 yrs ago, my daughter and I did this exact itinerary last July. My suggestions to you would be to include the area of Bavaria- particularly Garmisch- Partenkirchen. It is extremely quaint with lots of outdoor activities as well ( gorgeous mountains). Also, I would recommend the Fussen area where you can easily visit the two big castles - Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau. You can get tickets ahead of time from the US. Many people would encourage you to see Munich as well. Happy travels!
That's quite a broad area already. I'm writing a tedious trip report elsewhere on this area of the Helpline which include many off the beaten path places. Maybe have a squint there. You don't say where in the Netherlands. We discovered a really neat area on the Dutch/ German border southeast of Arnhem, and Trier and the Mosel was wonderful. With only 2 weeks though your original list seems pretty full.
