Should I go into Paris on May (or Labor) Day (May 1st)? Are there parades and other celebrations worth checking out? Where are they? I understand this is a big holiday here. I just looked at some previous posts about this. It looks like some museums and sites are closed, but that is OK. What about restaurants and shops?

Since we were busy doing our own sightseeing, I can't say about parades or celebrations. What I do know is that Paris will seem like everyone in France came to be there for the holiday -- and this year they will probably come on Friday and not leave until Wednesday! Some restaurants and shops are closed so they can take their own holiday, but did not notice much of a problem there. Most of the museums are open and so crowded you will have to push and shove through the crowds to see anything. Personally we like to visit Paris in the early spring before it gets so very crowded, but others like the excitement of the crowds.
