Does anyone know what the max withdrawal is from ATM's in France? Can you withdraw several thousand Euros at one time?
Our withdrawal limit is set by our bank and credit union ($300-500/day is default) but can be more if we request it to be raised prior to our trip.
While your withdrawals are ultimately determined by the limit set by your bank, keep in mind that in most of Europe you can withdraw much larger amounts of cash at the ATMs in the bank lobbies, than on the ATMs mounted outside!
You're daily limit is set by your bank, 9 times out of ten that's $500 or about 390 Euro at today's exchange rate.
Some banks will let you adjust your daily limit if you ask; most won't.
Your daily limit refreshes based on your bank's headquarters location. Sometimes you can get two withdrawels in a day by taking them a little before and after midnight at home. Other times you may run into problems because the bank thinks you are trying more than one transaction in a "day".
You also have potential fraud alert problems. Worse case scenario, your bank spots foreign transactions and puts a fraud hold on your account. They try to contact you at home and won't allow any transaction until they talk to you (of course you're not home to take those calls).
The way to prepare for this is to contact your bank and let them know you're plans. If you're lucky, that will solve the problem. If not, bring the bank's non-800 customer service number (800's don't work from Europe) so you can call them and get the hold off your account (often you still have to wait until the account refreshes after midnight).
Hope this helps.
Thanks everyone for your replies.
