I didn't know where to post this on the Graffiti Wall, and I understand this isn't a question, but wanted to let anyone know who planned on going to The Hague that The Mauritshuis will be closing for renovations beginning on April 28th of this year, with some of the collection moved to the Gemeentemuseum in The Hague during this time, . Unfortunatly, except for a short time, this will not include The Girl with the Pearl Earring, which will be on tour in America and Japan. Below is the web address of the Mauritshuis (sorry, can't link it with the question mark in there...) http://www.mauritshuis.nl/index.aspx?ChapterID=8958&FilterID=988&ContentID=42427
Not everyone goes to the Netherlands this early in the year. But with two floral exhibitions underway (Keukenhof and the Floriade), there are some reasons to go early-and we're going in April. So I appreciated this post. Anyway, as I read the website, the date of April 28, 2012 turns out to be the opening date of the temporary show of some of the collection, also in the Hague. The closing of the Mauritshuis is April 1, 2012. So between those two dates, you can't see any of it. And "Girl With A Pearl Earring" is scheduled to go to Japan, so that painting will go off exhibition (at the temporary location) on May 28, 2012. I think it will be gone for the entire summer.
We were there last week. The "Masterpieces of the Mauritshuis..." is a very good exhibition (better than "Masterpieces of the Rijksmuseum" in my opinion), and the Gemeentemuseum is a nice collection on its own. We had Museumkarten, so we didn't mind that it was 12 Euros. Plus for families, the dinosaur/natural history/ecology museum is next door, and it is so interactive that the lack of English text (for the kids) is not a big problem. Very different location than Mauritshuis, up near Schveningen end of town. We walked from the Palace, but it's very far.
