We will be vacationing I Europe for four months(Sept.-Jan.)! Because I have a bad hip that prohibits lots of walking we will not be using the trains for major traveling and will stay in cottages/apts for at least a week and do day trips. My husband and I Will spend 2 weeks in Ireland, a week to 10 days visiting a friend in Sardinia then fly to Barcelona (10/13)to lease a car and drive to Marseilles to meet friends. We will rent an apartment for a week or so. I know there is a major festival all year in the city and lots to see. Are there day trips to vineyards/wineries within a reasonable driving distance? From there we will head into northern Italy for exploring so I need to move into that region for more questions!
Have you heard of the Schengen Treaty???? If not....I am surprised one of the more regular posters on this Helpline has not alerted on your planned 4 month stay in Europe. There have been many long discussions about the Schengen Treaty requirement that you (as a US citizen) may only stay in Europe (with an automatic tourist visa) for 90 days out of a 180 day time frame. It is my understanding that Ireland is a Non-Schengen Country so that time does not count as part of your 90 day limit.
But from what I can tell from what you posted it seems the 3 1/2 months remaining would be in Schengen countries and might cause you a problem. You may need to do a little research about the Schengen Treaty requirements unless you already have a plan and did not post that information.
I just learned of this last night and we are working on a new plan; how to spend the excess days in countries not in the Schengen Pact and fit it into our overall initial plan. Thanks for the info!
Arles is about an hour away and a nice day trip. There's Roman ruins and Van Gogh history. The Pont du Gard is a little further away, but really cool, magnificent! Both are beautiful drives with lots of the southern France ambiance. Many of the towns around there have wonderful markets on different days of the week. Have a wonderful trip!
