Traveling to Marseilles in mid-June with 14 and 16 year old girls for a wedding; looking for suggestions for day trips, local attractions, and advice on a place to stay.
Nimes is an hour away.
Aigues Mortes is an hour and a half. A stop in Arles along the way would be great.
Orange is an hour; Avignon is a good stop enroute.
Aix is just up the road a few minutes.
Marseilles is loaded with hotels in the Accor chain from the lowely Formule1 to the best of the lot.
Experience the sea along the Provence Coast (1/2 hr east of Marseille)
Last summer we spent a week in Cassis - it's about a 40 min drive from Marseille if memory serves me! We had such a fabulous time there, it's a little fishing village with lots of great restaurants on the harbour. We loved wandering around the back streets and they have a fabulous market if you happen to go when it's on - it happend twice in the week we were there and I'm sure it's on their website or something.
They have beaches too but I'm sure they have lots in Marseille as well - just beware that the beaches are rocky and nearly impossible to walk on in bare feet!
Also did day trips to Arles (loved that, has a great old colleseum and even our kids aged 7 and 5 loved it) as well as Avignon. Avignon had a festival going on so it was really exciting - can't speak for what it would be like on a 'regular' day.
Have a great time!!
