Hi everyone
Just in case anyone is about tonight... we are spending 2 days exploring the area between Marseille and Nice (on a whim, so car hire location choice was limited)... any suggestions as to where we could stop and have look around or sleep tomorrow night? Dont mind backtracking towards Avignon - have visited Avignon and Arles already.

Here's a route that, according to viamichelin.com, would include some very scenic sections.
Take the D 559 from Marseille to Cassis. (I've driven this beautiful stretch.)
Go north on the autoroute, connect with D 560, and take it east to the junction with D 1. Take D 1 east to the junction with D N7 and take it east all the way to Frejus. Continue on the D N7 around the north side of the Massif de l'Esterel. According to viamichelin.com, the whole stretch along the massif is scenic.
From there you could take the A 8/E 80 to its junction with D 6185, take D 6185 to Grasse, and then the very scenic D 2085 from Grasse to just west of Nice. (I've driven the Grasse-Nice stretch, too.) Or if you're short of time, skip the detour north to Grasse and continue on the A 8/E 80 to Nice.
