Suggest you get a good guidebook (I used Lonely Planet). The desert isn't feasible as a day trip from Marrakesh. You don't really need a guide for Marrakesh, unless you want to be taken shopping, but the tourist office or your hotel can probably help.

It will take yo the best part of a day to get over the mountains to the desert (Tizi-n-Test or Tizi-n-Titchka passes) in a car. On a camel I would allow about two weeks. :-)
