Marrakesh

I am working on planning a trip to Portugal and Spain in August. I am trying to work Morocco into the equation, in particular, Marrakesh. I was considering only doing a day trip to Tangier, but its geographic proximity (on the fringe of Europe) and my desire to dive deeper into Morocco's culture and history, has compelled me to consider a trip to Marrakesh. If any fellow travelers have been here, I would appreciate any helpful tips and advice. How is the train system in Morocco? Is is realistic to take a train from Tangier to Marrakesh? What is the trip like? What is the best way to get around? I will be traveling solo.

Thanks!
Brian

Hi Brian:

We travelled to Marrakech November 2004, and loved it!! We spent the whole time (3 days) in the Medina and the Djema el Fna, which is a huge open air square filled with food stalls, snakes, Henna painters, monkeys, Berbers (not Barbers), musicians, storytellers, boxing matches, etc. The most magical and exciting public square we've ever seen. It comes alive at night.

We stayed in a Riad, basically a small hotel facing inward to a beautiful little pool and palm trees, with a rooftop garden where they served breakfast. I think it was called Riad la Orangerie, through I-Escape, a British vacation rental agency. But there are tons of other Riads just like it.

We flew from London, to avoid the train, frankly. The train is 8 hours!! Since 2004, several airlines fly to Marakkech for very reasonable prices, Atlas Air is one but ironically none from Spain or Portugal. Consider flying through London or Paris or wherever the other airlines fly from. Try "Whichbudget.com".
