Markets in Munich

Is there a market at the Marienplatz in Munich on Sundays?

Thanks! I just bookmarked that website to refer to. After a quick glance, I am bummed that I missed the Starkbierzeit and since it will be the middle of May, I'm definitely missing the Oktoberfest. Maybe just a walk through the Marienplatz ending at the Hofbrauhaus? I will be attending a meeting and only have one day to look around. I love photography and find I get the best pictures people-watching with some random architecture thrown in. I wish I could stay longer but consider myself lucky to be returning to Germany exactly one year later (spent 2 weeks last year and loved it) so I will thoroughly enjoy my one leisure day.

Marienplatz and the adjacent pedestrain area/ rathaus and its glockenspiel, ratskeller are great for people watching, interesting strolling. Have found extremely good classical street musicians. Saturday (per google) the Viktuellenmarket is open until 8pm. (worth a visit if youy can make it)

Definately go to the Viktualienmarkt - it is just a block from Marienplatz, opposite the Rathaus direction.

Folks, the OP is asking about markets on Sunday. All stores and markets in Germany are closed on Sundays except when they have Sunday shopping 4 times a year or a special antique market sometimes.

Well that settles that then, thank you for the information. Will I be able to get a beer and currywurst at the Hofbrauhaus at least? Any other suggestions for a Sunday afternoon in Munich? Sorry, what is an"OP"?

Depending on the weekend you go, the Fruhlingsfest might still be going on. It is a smaller version of the Oktoberfest with less crowds and more locals. I went last spring and had an absolute blast. Am planning to go again in 2012.

OP stands for Original Poster. You, Jane, are the Original Poster and you asked about markets on Sundays. Restaurants are open, museums are open, tourist attractions are open, it is just the stores and markets that are closed on Sundays in Germany.

Thanks Jo, I like "original poster" better than "old person". BTW, your posts are always so helpful, you helped me so much last year when I went to Germany!
