How long does the typical market day last? Specifically, Sarlat's? Aix's? Beaune's? Are weekday market days usually shorter than Saturday market days? Thanks.
Most of the markets seem to be ready for business well before 8:00 am. We often see them being set up the night before, and the vendors start packing up to leave by 1:00 pm.
Most markets in France are pretty much closed up by 1:00 PM or so.
You have to realize that the market vendors move from town to town. They have to shut down in the early afternoon to get to the next place and be set up sometime the night before for that place's market. I'd say that the times for Sarlat and Beaune are about right since they're small towns. The one at Aix would probably last longer since there's more population, hence more traffic. My mind's feeble, but I think the one at Aix may well span parts of two days - - at least for some of the vendors.
Lunch-time more or less terminates markets, except in the touristy areas. Everyone in France acts on that. You may find stalls still open in the afternoon, but most will have closed.
Thanks to you all. Very helpful. Can't expect to catch a market day if you're just getting to the town in the afternoon.
Two of Aix's markets are daily. It's on the city's travel info--but in French.
