We will be in Northern Italy in mid March for a conference. Would like to travel afterward, not looking to stay in Italy as we have been ther many times. Where are the best places visit at this time. Also want them to be somewhat convenient to where we will start (Varese Italy). We like to sightsee, love to learn about culture and history of areas we travel. Thanks for suggestions.

Starting in Varese in March and not looking to stay in Italy, your smack dab up against the east-west length and height of the Alps, a formidable mountain range. If you like winter sports, go right up in the mountains. If you don't care for winter sports, and don't want to stay in Italy, you'll have to make a left end run of the Alps ending in France and might find better weather at the French Riviera.
