My best friend and I are planning a week stay in Mannheim in May. Trying to find accommodations that do not require using something like Travelocity or Expedia (so many do) to book. We are okay with no frills just clean, safe and comfortable -- rather spend money on food, beer and sightseeing than sleeping. Thanks

Rae, I'm in Mannheim today... The nightlife takes place between the Wasserturm and Paradeplatz squares. That's all in ZIP code area 68161 although Mannheim has got an excellent tram network. Check for cheap accommodation at www.hrs.com.

Mannheim has a decent and inexpensive hostel on the east bank of the Rhine in an attractive setting within walking distance of the train station. There's a very short window for breakfast, so be on time. Cost is 20 Euros or less each, breakfast included.
