Hello!
I will be spending 6 days in Malta. I will be staying in a nice hotel in the capital of Malta. I would love to hear specific suggestions and advice on how/where to sightsee, shop and of course eat and drink! So specifics, and "how to" are greatly appreciated. Also, if you know anything about traveling on a day trip to Sicily from Malta plz include. Thank you!
Hi Debra, We stayed at the wonderful Hotel Phoenicia which is located just outside the walled city of Valletta. Convenient local buses took us everywhere on the island. The old city of Mdina and the fishing village of Marsaxlokk were especially interesting. We also took the Gozo Channel Line ferry from Malta to Gozo for a day of sightseeing. I would check into the Gozo Channel Line for your day trip to Sicily. Malta is wonderful but Valletta makes it very special. Enjoy your stay.
I spent two weeks in Malta a few years ago, which in retrospect was too long but I did like it very much. For a day trip to Sicily, your hotel can probably book that for you. We did it and it was very worthwhile ... particularly liked the city of Modica where we spent a couple of hours. The Malta bus system will take you all over the island. The buses are quite colourful and so are the drivers. There is a huge bus terminal just at the edge of Valletta where you can board a bus to wherever you want to go. The fishing village of Marxxalox is worth a visit, and so is the Cathedral at Mosta. You can also tour the WWII Operations Rooms, 70 ft under the city walls, where the Allied invasion of Europe was planned. Fascinating! There is a small but interesting archeology museum in Valletta which we visited, too. For an excellent view of the harbour, one of the world's finest, have a drink or a coffee at Café Deux Baronnes. In general we found the food in Malta to be very ordinary so keep your expectations in check in this regard. The Lonely Planet Malta guide book will be useful to you.
