Malaga, Spain lodging recommendations

Will be in Malaga for 2 nights i late December with 23 year old son. Would like more of an authentic experience, and near the old town area, but close enough to walk to the beach. Two places most interesting to me so far: El Riad Andaluz-and Eurostars Astoria, so if any of you have stayed in either and have comments, or ANY other suggestions, please answer. Would like also to be near local bars and small restaurants, but also safe. Thanks very much for your help !

Mary, I cannot recomend an authentic experience,(just the opposite; is a modern) but I can reccomend a fantastic hotel one block from old town. We stayed at the Salles Hotel Malaga Centro last June. For $79 Eu/nite we got a huge! double superior room with a great view. (only get the rooms in the back.) It had a great little roof top bar and pool(order a Mojito; oooooooooMG!) I am NOT a fan of modern hotels: i like authentic also. But I would go back to this place in a heartbeat. Read the reviews in Trip Advisor.

Mary, we had a recomendation for a Tapas bar in Old Town. (La Campagna) It was awesome, but was adjacent to a couple of very smelly manhole covers. The high temps that day did not help our dining experience. I would just wander old town, and poke around until you see something popular, or that looks good to you.

We have just returned from Malaga and would recommend that you check out Meson lo Gueno restaurant and they also have a tapas bar of the same name across the street. Also we went to a wine bodega on almeda principal, the name of it is Antigua casa de guardia. The interesting thing about Malaga is just how easy it is to fall upon interesting little bars and of course a good rule is that to eat and drink where the locals do.The christmas lights have been switched on in malaga and are stunning and so its great that you will be able to see them. Finally down at the beach we sat at some Chiringuitos {small bars}and very typically spanish and enjoyed fried fish .
Enjoy Malaga.
