Madrid, where to stay

There are two of us who will be staying in Madrid for about 7 nights this summer. I'm looking for inexpensive places to stay, it doesn't have to be fancy. Hostels are also ok. I can't tell for sure that websites are legit, and some reviews look iffy. Any websites recommended? Apartment, hostel, what do you recommend? I'm having a hard time picking a place. Thanks. :)

Inexpensive or fancy have no meanings. What is your price range?

A friend of mine uses booking.com with great results. We just got back from two weeks in Spain, and my neighbor who's a travel agent put us into five different hotels. I decided to see if our hotels were listed on booking.com and they were with spot-on reviews from past guests and no misleading claims from the hoteliers. That added a lot of credibility for booking.com for me. Hope you find some good places to stay.

If cost is the criterion, then there's a nice modern Etap hotel in the Madrid neighbourhood of Suances for 45 Euro/night. It's about a 20 minute metro ride from downtown, but it's a wonderful neighbourhood. I've stayed there several times, and quite enjoy getting away from the hustle and bustle of downtown. Etap Hotels are one of the international Accor Hotel chains...accommodation is modern, clean, and comfortable, although basic. Each room has an ensuite. Click here to check it out. It seems they have a sale for 39 Euro/room freom July 10th into September.

Two Hostels I stayed in April, 2010 - Both in the same building at 15 Gran Via...Hostel Montecarlo and Hostel Philipe V - Montecarlo is on the 3rd floor, and Philipe V is on the 5th. I had a room on the front, with private balcony in Philipe V (Room 4). Very adequate and the operators are helpful. In Montecarlo, I had a room on the inside, (Room 3). It was larger and quieter. I would stay in either one again. The location can not be beat on Gran Via. Price will be about the same in either. Check out the websites.
