We are taking a day trip to Toledo from Madrid. We are going to purchase our tickets in advance. We are thinking of arriving by train at about 10:00AM. How much time do we need to reserve to see the sites of Toledo? If we book the 18:50 train to return will that give us enough time? Thanks for your help!
Bob...that should give you lots of time to see the major sites and walk through the old part of the city....and to have a nice lunch.
Plenty of time. You will have a wonderful adventure!
Thanks again for the help!
Your schedule sounds good. We did approx the same as you.
You might consider the bus, we did. It dumps right in the middle of old city whereas the train station is outside of town and requires a bus or taxi to get to the old city. We thought the bus was more convenient and much cheaper.
Actually, I'll be the one to disagree.
The "sites of Toledo" are mostly the city itself. Sure, there's the cathedral, and some nice squares and some pretty views, but it's not like there's a list of 5 star monuments. It's wandering the city's neighborhoods, exploring the narrow streets, and soaking up the feeling of a medieval city. And that's best done in the hours that are exactly opposite what you're planning.
The vast majority of visitors do exactly what you're planning: arrive mid/late morning, kick around for ha;f a day, then shuffle back to Madrid for dinner.
Guess what: during those hours, the city is pretty crowded with day-trippers. But before 10 am and after 5 pm - the place is empty, and the atmosphere is very different (and I'd say much, much nicer).
I think it's worth spending the night there, so you can enjoy the magical atmosphere of the city when the streets are empty, rather than packed with tour groups.
YMMV - just my opinion.
