Madrid to Toledo

We are flying into Madrid Friday morning and plan to spend 3 nights in Madrid then take the train to Sevilla. We plan on doing a day trip to Toledo but after reading many posts I think we should spend one night there. Would it be best to leave Madrid Sunday morning for Toledo and spend the night?
The only thing is we'd have to backtrack to Madrid to get to Sevilla. Correct? Is Sunday a good day to visit Toledo?

We spent a Saturday and Sunday night in Toledo in 2011 so were there all day Sunday. Mew are not shoppers, so it was great. We went for a run on the path along the river and people were out there fishing and enjoying the day. Across the way there was some kind of religious activity going on, with lots of people walking up a trail to a worship spot. Later we happened across a wedding. The whole town seemed to be in a festive mood. Yes, you do have to return to Madrid to catch the AVE to Seville, but that is quicj and easy. Must be sure to allow 30 minutes or more between trains. You cannot just walk across the platform from one train to the other like most train stations. You have to exit the platform,,go around and enter the boarding area waiting room and wait for the gate to be called for the Seville train.

Lola replied about your train questions. I'd just like to second Toledo as very worthwhile. The cathedral is amazing and has many El Greco paintings - also very cool medieval carvings on the misericords of fantastical and pagan beings. We stayed overnight at the Posada de Manolo (in Rick's book) and it was a great little hotel. Reasonable rates and a nice breakfast on a balcony overlooking the cathedral. Don't try to walk from the train station into town. (I think RS implies that you can.) Too far - take a cab instead.

Definitely stay overnight in Toledo if you can!!! It is a different city when the train load of tourist has departed. And, Posada De Manolo by all means. Fantastic location, and the breakfast overlooking the cathedral can not be beat. Get the hand held guide for the Cathederal. Very informative. Also, visit the Musuem de Santa Cruz, just off the main plaza (Plaza Zodocover) as well as the house of El Greco. The jewish section is excellent... And, take the taxi from the train station up to the Cathedral for the trip of a lifetime!!!!

Thank you for your replies! I did book a night at the Posada de Manolo!!! We are so excited for our trip! One more question: Does the train station in Madrid have lockers big enough to hold a full size suitcase? We are thinking of just packing an overnight bag and leaving the big luggage there. We are heading to Sevilla on Monday to spend the week there during the April Fair. We know it will be crowded but my niece is there for a semester and she has that week off. Thanks again!
