I give up. What's the best way to get from Madrid to Lisbon? We have looked at train, bus and both.
Hey Jim..why dont you fly? Easy Jet fly that route...and they have cheap fares...regards Elly in Oz....
I've taken a bus from Seville to Lisbon but haven't taken the train. Rick's 2007 Spain book says, from Madrid: Lisbon (1/day departing at 22:45, 10 hours, pricey overnight Hotel Train from Charmartin)."
It does seem like flying might be a more efficient option.
Elly's spot on. The only train journey, believe it or not, is an overnight train, and that can be expensive. There are buses, but it's anywhere from 6 1/2 to 9 hours to make the run....one daytime bus, one in the late afternoon and one (ugh!) overnight.
Jim, My wife and I are currently in Spain. I booked Easy Jet tickets before we left home for our travel leg from Madrid to Lisbon - the overnight Trenhotel just didn't make sense for us. I booked them approx. 2 months early and got a rate of 19 Euros per ticket. That price beat all other choices by a mile!
Night train is the only way to go.
