Madrid to Lisboa

Am I nuts tring to drive Madrid Barajas Airport to Lisbon in one day? I know it will be long - about 400 miles. I'd fly but I like to see the country, not fly over it. Also the reason I don't really want to take the A-5 either. Any estimate on the time? If I have to stop , is it better in Badajoz, Sp or Evora, Port?

We flew Easyjet. Fast, easy and cheap. Train takes way too long. Driving might be okay, but it's mostly desert.

Presuming you would drop off the car in Lisboa, are you happy with those large fees?

If you decide to drive a stop in Evora would be well worth your time. Small town, great sites. The ruins are amazing. Lovely town. We did a day trip from Lisbon. we took the bus and easily done in a day.

Yes, that seems nuts to me. As noted upthread, you're going to get slammed with a stunningly large drop-off fee for the car rental - be sure you're figuring that into your plans. Flying would be a lot cheaper and would give you more time to enjoy the trip. The only reason I could imagine that might justify driving would be if your plan was to tour Portugal by car and then drive back to Spain (avoiding the drop-off fee) and that you had plenty of time. Even then I'd still consider flying, renting a car for Portugal, drop it there, get back to Spain via other transport, and rent a car for Spain. BUt it depends on your specific route and plans. I hope you're not planning to fly from San Diego to Madrid, rent a car upon arrival, and then immediately drive to Portugal. You would not be a very safe driver in that scenario, and I'd urge you to seriously reconsider.
