Propose to take in San Sebastian and Bilboa.
First thought to train to San Seb and use local transport. Does anyone have any suggestions on route and stopovers for driving from Madrid to San Seb?

A nice size town in the Ribera del Duero wine region north of Madrid is Aranda del Duero. It's not a long drive away and is quite a nice town. Depending on how long you want to drive per day, you could go further to Burgos. A nice detour off the road to Bilbao is the Rioja wine region Haro which is bigger, Laguardia smaller and more quaint, Elciego home of Marques de Riscal.
