Madrid to Barcelona and then on to France

Just got back from a 15 day trip through the South of Spain that ended in Madrid. Already thinking about the next trip. I want to start in Madrid (i miss it already) and then go on to Barcelona. From there to France and fly home from Paris. Here's the question: What stops should I make from Barcelona to Paris. Eagerly awaiting to read all responses!

Hi Sheila,

There are so many great places to stop on the way to Paris! I'm sure others will have their favorites, but here are just some starting ideas:

Cadaques (artsy seaside village up the coast from Barcelona)
Carcassonne (medieval walled city not too far over the border in France)
Provence
Burgundy

If you're not in a hurry to get to Paris and you want to really settle into an area, you could choose a home base in Provence and explore for a week. I would taste wine, visit the bustling local markets, kayak underneath the Pont du Gard, and enjoy starry, starry nights! Avignon is only 3.5 hours from Paris on the TGV.

Alternatively, if you wanted to stay on the move, you could stop for just a couple days in southern France and then hightail it up to Burgundy. Both have beautiful countryside, great wine, and lovely towns. Provence can be terribly hot in the summer, so weather might actually make Burgundy a better choice.

Whatever you choose, I'm so jealous of your trip!

If you're travelling by the main railway lines between Barcelona and Paris the easiest places to stop off might be Montpellier, Marseille, or Lyon. Have a look and see which one looks most interesting.
