Has/does anybody taken/recomend a tapas walking tour in Spain?? We are 4 women travelling this September and we thought this would be a great introduction to Madrid on our 1st night in town.
A tapas tour is a great idea. I've never done it exactly that way, taking my tapas in smaller outings, but the RS Spain guide offers great suggestions. One recommendation for your tour: Casa Labra Taberna Restaurante for its fantastic and inexpensive tajada de bacalao. It's near the Puerta del Sol.
Tapas should be available much earlier in the day than a full dinner, an advantage for travellers. However, in my admittedly limited experience of Madrid, tapas is not such a key part of the social experience as in some other cities, particularly Bilbao (where the proper Basque name is now pintxos). I am sure to be contradicted and will watch with interest as specific recommendations appear on this thread.
Kathy,
A good tapas crawl can be found on Calle Victoria, just East of Puerta del Sol. Here you'll find La Casa del Abuelo which Rick featured in his video. It's specialty is Gambas or shrimp tapas.
We didn't take an organized tapas tour but we did our own "tapas crawl" on Calle Cava Baja. There were several tapas bars in a couple of blocks. They run the gamut from funky casual to rather elegant. If you are not visiting Basque Country on your trip then check out Txakolina Pintxoteca at #26 for pintxos and Txakoli (type of Basque white wine). There are also a few restaurants in case you're still there at dinnertime.
No advice on a tapas tour but don't miss the San Miguel market for tapas and all sorts of delicious treats. Great place for lunch.
