We are travelling through Madrid and seeking suggestions to stay in the city center. we have about 11 hours between plans. Some suggested staying near the Atocha train/bus center. Thoughts?

Personally we would stay near our transportation options since the time period is so short. You can always catch a cab downtown for a couple of hours. The train and bus center are not that close together.

Not clear from your post - are you 11 hours between flights or 11 hours between your flight and another mode of transport? If flights, I'd stay close to the airport and make your trip into the city by metro, airport shuttle, or cab (faster but more expensive). If between flight and train or bus elsewhere, I'd stay near the bus/train station. Personally I loved Hotel Europa (on Placa del Sol) but it's not near either (though close to metro).
