Madrid Street Repairs?

We were planning to go to Madrid this April but heard that the streets are all torn up and the city is in chaos! Has anyone been there recently to confirm?

I think that's just the way the city is. The current mayor has been nicknamed the "Pharaoh" due to the scope of his civic improvement program. As a result, there are construction sites all over the city. I'm not really sure that it would be too much of a bother for a tourist, more of a pain for somebody who has a regular commute. Enjoy the trip, and don't worry about the streets.

Chaos? No. Just returned from Madrid and noticed no construction in the city center that would impact your tourist experience in a negative way. However, I did notice a fairly sizeable contingent of “street sweeper” type folks. It works…you won’t see papers or trash on the sidewalks or in the plazas. Also, sort of interesting and noteworthy was the significant police presence in places like Puerta del Sol. You’ll have no problem in the tourist areas with construction zones.

As I thought about this for another second or two, I realized that I did see some construction, but it wasn’t an issue from a visitor’s perspective: (1) Immediately east of Teatro Real – fenced off area of construction – not a problem, (2) Couple of blocks south of Teatro La Zarzuela – street construction around what I believe was a government building – not really a tourist area and not a problem for visitors, and (3) Construction immediately around Atocha station – no hindrance at all arriving/departing station.

Enjoy your visit!

The construction that had Sol torn up, in various stages, for years is now over. There is some work going on to fill in Plaza Callao (no vehicular traffic allowed any more) and some work being done on a building front there. But the Callao work should be done by the time you get there. Other than that, no more street construction than any other big city.....not a problem in areas you'll visit.
