We are doing an elderhostel of Andalucia and Morocco next May and June. We thought to relieve travel weariness by staying a few days in Madrid beforehand. That puts us in Madrid right during the feria de San Isidro. Is that a problem these days? Or is Madrid now so large it can swallow the feria and a normal toruist load as well?
It'll be crowded....but no more so than during late June or July. Lots of concerts, parades, street exhibitions and the like...and, of course, bull fights. And since people in Madrid stay up late anyway, be prepared for crowds until dawn. Just make sure you reserve a place to stay as early as you can, since rooms will be hard to find if you leave it too late. One option might be to book at the Etap or Ibis hotel in the Suances region of Madrid....a lovely quiet area about a 20 minute Metro ride to the east of downtown. It will allow you to "decompress" and get away from the crowds and the noise.
